The Festival started life in 1938, originally embracing the disciplines of Music, Speech & Drama and Dance. Some years ago, the Dance element was removed, since when it has formed a separate festival.
The object of the Festival is to advance the education of the public in the Arts, and in particular the Arts of Music, Speech and Drama in all their branches.
The Festival promotes its object by holding annual competitions, and a subsequent Concert, the GEMS concert, to promote items of particular merit. It is also the policy of the Festival to select the best possible adjudicators, and to encourage them to make helpful and constructive comments about all performances. Support of the Festival is encouraged through membership as a Friend or Subscriber.
Management of the Festival is controlled through a committee of volunteers, with additional voluntary help during the course of the actual Festival itself. Other than to the adjudicators, where fees and expenses are paid in line with the recommendations of the British Federation of Festivals and certain incidental venue expenses, no payment for services is made.
The Festival is a charity which was registered by the Charity Commission on 21st June, 1994, Number 1038813. It is governed by a constitution which was adopted on 13th June 1994.
